I have often had conversations with friends from different parts of the world over whether or not it was customary to greet strangers on a walk. I imagine in Hawaii you have a lot of tourists along this trail, so it might be harder to draw conclusions. In the South, such greetings are commonplace whereas in NYC you would probably get a few raised eyebrows. Interesting post.
